Light Up Your House!
As you start getting ready to leave the desert for the summer months..take a few minutes and walk the perimeter of your home and check for burned out landscape lights. Not having these lights on is a clear sign to a criminal that you may not be home. Add exterior spot lights to your landscape and inside timers to room lights. A well-known fact is: a well-lit home is less likely to be invaded or burglarized.
Should I leave my appliances (toasters, coffee pots, etc.) plugged in?
No. Unplug all appliances including TV’s, phones etc. This will prevent any unnecessary electrical problems if a power surge occurs.
Should I turn off the water to the clothes washer?
Yes. Unattended washers have been known to spring leaks!
Should I turn off my water heater?
No, just turn the thermostat to the lowest setting if you are going to be away from your home for several months. If you turn off the gas, relighting may be difficult and the Gas Company may be needed to relight.
Should I turn off my ice maker and refrigerator/freezer?
There should be no need to turn off your refrigerator/freezer if they contain sealed food items. You should turn off the ice maker as you will not be needing ice while you are away. This will prevent any water leakages. Turning off the main water supply line to the house is advisable.
